Cardiology
What is cardiology?
Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine that deals with diseases of the cardiovascular system. Cardiologists are specialists in internal medicine with a focus on cardiology.
What does a cardiologist do?
A cardiologist is a specialist in the treatment of chest pain, high blood pressure, heart failure, valvular heart disease, vascular disease and other diseases of the heart and blood vessels. He may order tests such as electrocardiograms, echocardiograms and computed tomography (CT) scans to find out what is going on. Based on his diagnosis, he may prescribe medication, help you develop healthier exercise and eating habits, or perform a cardiac catheterization.
When should you consult a cardiologist?
Your GP will refer you to a cardiologist if you have a problem with your heart or blood vessels that requires special attention. If you experience chest pain, dizziness, palpitations, or shortness of breath, you must see a cardiologist. We will take care of you for as long as you need, monitoring your condition closely.
What can you expect during your first visit to our cardiology practice?
We will perform a physical examination and discuss your symptoms, your medical history, and your family history with you. It is crucial that you inform us if you have a family history of heart problems, as this significantly increases the likelihood of you developing a heart problem yourself. We need some basic information to assess your cardiovascular health. This includes:
Weight
Blood pressure
Cholesterol levels
Blood sugar levels
We will use all of this information and test results to determine your risk factors for heart problems. We also require information about your smoking habits, exercise routine, diet, and current medications.
How do you prepare for an appointment in our cardiology consultation?
We may ask you the following questions:
How long have you had these symptoms?
How do you feel when you have the symptoms (e.g. mild or severe pain)?
What were you doing when the symptoms occurred (resting, exerting yourself)?
Is there anything that helps you feel better when you have symptoms?
Have you had a heart procedure or surgery in the past?
Do you have a record of any investigations?
What medication are you currently taking?
A separate appointment may be required for other tests that take a little longer and require specialized screening equipment that is only available at certain collaborating hospitals.
Do you need a referral to see Dr. Konstantinou?
Generally not. However, with some health insurance companies you may need a referral from your family doctor. Talk to us about your insurance plan so that the rules of your insurance company can be adhered to. This way you can save money and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Why should you choose Dr. Konstantinou as your cardiologist?
Dr. Konstantinou has specialized in the field of arteriosclerosis in particular. He is one of the few cardiologists who have specialized further in the field of lipometabolic diseases. Among other things, he has acquired the additional qualifications of 'lipidology' (fat metabolism specialist) and 'hypertensiology' (high blood pressure specialist). He has the latest equipment at his disposal to diagnose cardiovascular diseases quickly and precisely.
His primary goal is to prevent or detect atheromatosis or arteriosclerosis at an early stage and to provide you with the best possible primary or secondary medical treatment. In addition to lifestyle optimization, this also includes the optimal adjustment of all secondary cardiac risk factors and the didactic education of patients and relatives. The long-term goal is to reduce mortality and prevent events such as heart attacks or strokes.
